Book Club

All meetings are held at the Library.

September 20, 2016

We had an enjoyable meeting yesterday and a lively discussion of The Secret Wisdom of the Earth by Christopher Scotton.  Everyone enjoyed the book and its depth into the realities of complicated human and family relationships as well as realities pertaining to the coal industry. This being Scotton’s first novel, we were very impressed and look forward to his future works.

Books read over the past few months include The Million Dollar Boy, West Into the Night, The Havener Sisters, Harvesting the Heart, The Underground Railroad.  I’m sure I missed a few, as I get caught up in conversation and forget to take notes!  My apologies.

Bunny’s Edinburgh Castle shortbreads and English tea were awesome.  Thanks Bunny!  Its probably a good thing if that shortbread isn’t sold here in the USA!  I for one would be having it every day!

Here’s our schedule for the upcoming months:

Monday, October 17  (3:00 pm)
A Man Called Ove  (Fredrik Backman), discussion led by Marie

Sunday, November 13 (2:00 pm)
We will participate in the “reader’s afternoon”, hosted by our library.  Various area book groups will describe their group and mention books that have generated good discussions.  This could be an excellent opportunity to gain new members and ideas for our group.  We hope that all of us will be able to attend this event, which will take the place of a regular November meeting.  At our October meeting we’ll decide who is best qualified to speak for our group at the event.  Cookies, bars or brownies are requested for the event (enough to serve 2 dozen attendees).  We can discuss that further at our October meeting.   Beverages will be provided by the library.

Monday, December 12 (3:00 pm)     Christmas party and member gift swap

January through April - no meetings – stay safe & warm!

Monday, May 8 (3:00 pm)
Book to be announced at a future meeting, discussion led by Polly

Monday, June 5 (3:00 pm)
The Other Boleyn Girl (Philippa Gregory), discussion led by Randi

I think that’s it folks.  Any errors or omissions, please let me know.
